India Exploring Backup Options as Jasprit Bumrah’s Fitness in Doubt for Champions Trophy
India’s plans for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy may be jeopardized as star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is unlikely to recover in time. The ace fast bowler has been undergoing rehabilitation after a recurring back injury forced him to leave the Border-Gavaskar Trophy during the final Test in Sydney.
BCCI Considering Alternatives
A Times of India (TOI) report revealed that New Zealand-based orthopedic surgeon Dr. Rowan Schouten is evaluating Bumrah’s condition. Bumrah may also travel to New Zealand for further consultation based on Schouten’s assessment.
A BCCI source stated, "It would take a miracle for Bumrah to be 100% fit in time for the Champions Trophy." This raises concerns, as Bumrah’s previous back injuries have frequently sidelined him, including from the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Mohammed Shami to Lead the Pace Attack?
With Bumrah’s participation unlikely, experienced pacer Mohammed Shami is emerging as the frontrunner to lead India’s bowling attack. Shami, who has been focusing on his fitness, is reportedly bowling at full throttle and is expected to play in the three-match ODI series against England as preparation for the marquee tournament.
Bumrah’s Injury Woes
Bumrah’s recurring back problems stem from his unique frontal bowling action, which places significant stress on his body. Despite undergoing surgery in 2022 under Dr. Schouten, his recovery has been slow, raising doubts about his availability for high-pressure tournaments like the Champions Trophy.
India is now looking at backup options to bolster their pace attack, as uncertainty continues to cloud Bumrah’s participation.
