Asia Cup 2025: India Announce Squad, Suryakumar to Lead, Shreyas Iyer Misses Out

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced a 15-member squad for the Asia Cup 2025, naming Suryakumar Yadav as captain and Shubman Gill as vice-captain. The announcement created a stir after the in-form Shreyas Iyer was left out despite enjoying a stellar IPL 2025 season.

Shreyas Iyer’s Surprising Omission

Iyer’s exclusion raised eyebrows, especially since the right-hander amassed 604 runs at a strike rate of 175 for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025, taking them to the final. However, chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified during the press conference that the decision wasn’t based on Iyer’s form.

“Again, no fault of his. Got to tell me who he can replace? At the moment, will have to wait for his chance,” Agarkar said.

Why Abhishek Sharma Was Picked Instead

Agarkar highlighted the need for balance in the 15-man squad, explaining that Abhishek Sharma’s all-round ability tipped the scales in his favor.

“It’s unfortunate. With what Abhishek has done over the last year or so, plus he gives us a bowling option if required. One of these guys was always going to miss out,” he noted.

Washington Sundar in Reserves

Another notable exclusion was Washington Sundar, who has been named among the reserves. Agarkar explained that the selectors prioritized an extra batter in Rinku Singh over a fourth spinner.

“He’s always in the scheme of things. But with Varun, Kuldeep, and Axar already in, we felt Rinku gives us the depth in batting. If there were 16 spots, maybe Washington could’ve made it,” said Agarkar.

India’s Asia Cup 2025 Fixtures

India, the eight-time Asia Cup champions, begin their campaign against UAE on September 10, before locking horns with arch-rivals Pakistan in Dubai on September 14.
